Valley of the Fires

This is a well maintained park run by the Bureau of Land Management. It sits on a lava flow that occurred around 5000 years ago. The lava covers thousands of acres. A true desert, this spot was cold at night with breezes and excellent stargazing, and scorching hot during the day. Some flora manages to thrive, such a desert blooming willow, yucca, desert grasses and desert lilies.  It was an interesting place for a layover, although I couldn't imagine calling it home.
